Chapter Six

~ Sunshine ~

Brooks left hours ago, without so much as a single reason behind his departure. I tried texting him, but it buzzed on the couch next to me. Since then, I’d been hanging around with his mom, who was a delight. I could see where Brooks got his sweetness. I couldn’t say the same for his jackass brothers or their wench wives.

Not two minutes after he was out the door, the jokes had started. All at the expense of my boyfriend. From calling him a pansy to talking about his scar. They were smart enough to do it behind their mom’s back, but purposely did it within earshot of me. Anger was a mild description for what I felt as they attacked him.

If this wasn’t my future mother-in-law’s home, I would have already beaten their asses. However, I’d promised Brooks to ignore them, for his mom’s sake. Either way, my heart broke for my guy. Visions of an awkward boy dealing with three monsters for brothers played out in my head like a bad movie. No wonder he didn’t see his worth when he was demeaned at every turn.

I didn’t blame their mom for it. She was clueless to how horrible they treated him. Still, once I got closer to her—which I suspected would be soon—I’d let her know just what I thought of her three stooges.

Beatrice excused herself for a moment, having to take a call and leaving me alone with the trolls. I dreaded it. At first, they didn’t say anything, but their eyes were set on me. Adjusting myself, I turned in my chair so I wouldn’t face them. I really wished Brooks would get back already.

“So, how long have you been with my brother?” Steven asked, taking the seat in front of me.

I rolled my eyes. “None of your business.”

I wanted to slap that smirk right off his face as he continued to goad me. “Must be recent. I went up to his office not even two weeks ago, and the fucker didn’t have a thing to live for. You’re a miracle, showing up out of the blue.”

My eyes narrowed on him. “Is this going somewhere, or are you in the habit of talking shit?”

As if we were in some frat boy cliché movie, the other brothers made noises egging him on. I really needed to get Brooks’ DNA tested. There’s no way they shared the same bloodline. I was more convinced of this by the second.

I sighed.

There was no point in entertaining this neanderthal. Pulling out my phone I got on Facebook and scrolled through the recent pictures of me and Brooks. My whole family had commented on our updated relationship status. It warmed my heart to see how easily he’d been welcomed by them. My parents already referred to him as son.

At Christmas, Penny had asked if he had an available brother. Yeah, that would be a big fat no. Even if they weren’t all married. Maybe, I could set her up with Dean instead.
